wisconsin badgers History

The University of Wisconsin's football team, the Wisconsin Badgers, play in the Big Ten Conference as part of the NCAA's Football Bowl Division I Subdivision. The Badgers began playing college football in 1889. Wisconsin has an all-time record of 625-467-53 for a .569 winning percentage. The Badgers have won 12 conference titles and 11 bowl games. Wisconsin has produced 22 consensus All-Americans and two Heisman Trophy winners (Alan Ameche in 1954 and Ron Dayne in 1999).

The Wisconsin Badgers enjoyed early success, becoming the Big Ten's first conference champion in 1896. Wisconsin won three more conference titles through 1906. The Badgers also enjoyed success during the 1950s, when they were an AP Top 25 team 8 times and played in their first Rose Bowl. Wisconsin also played in the 1962 Rose Bowl. The Badgers then experienced a long drought and did not appear in another bowl game until the 1981 Garden State Bowl. In the early 1980s Wisconsin was once again successful under Dave McClain. The Badgers appeared in bowl games in 1981, 1982 and 1984. In 1990 Barry Alvarez became head coach. Over the course of his 16 year coaching career he led the Beavers to 3 Big Ten Conference championships and 11 bowl games (with an 8-3 record).

The current head coach of the Wisconsin Badgers is Bret Bielema. He has a 49-16 record in five years for a .754 winning percentage. He has led Wisconsin to 5 bowl appearances with a 2-3 record. The Badgers home games are played in Madison, Wisconsin at Camp Randall Stadium, which has a seating capacity of 80,321.
