pittsburgh steelers History

The professional NFL football team Pittsburgh Steelers are based out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They are an American Football Conference member in the North Division. The Steelers were founded in 1933 and are the AFC's oldest franchise. The team has won six Super Bowl titles, seven AFC Championship Games and hosted ten conference championship games, leading all AFC and NFC teams in each of those categories. The Steelers have played in one Super Bowl at least in every decade the contest has been held, except for the 1960s when just three Super Bowls were played. The most recent championship for the Steelers occurred February 1, 2009 when they won Super Bowl XLIII.

The Steelers are the NFL's fifth oldest franchise. They were founded by Art Rooney in 1933 and called the Pittsburgh Pirates originally after the city's professional baseball team. Since the team's founding, the Steeler's ownership has stayed with the Rooney family. Art's son Dan is the current owner of the team. Art Rooney II, son of Dan, controls a majority of the franchise.

The Pittsburgh Steelers enjoy a large fan base, which goes by the name Steeler Nation. The team plays their home games in the North Side of Pittsburgh at Heinz Field.
