Ohio State University's football team, the Ohio State Buckeyes, play in the Big Ten Conference as part of the NCAA's Football Bowl Division I Subdivision. The Buckeyes began playing college football in 1890. Ohio State has an all-time record of 831-309-53 for an impressive .719 winning percentage. Ohio State has won 7 national titles, 37 conference titles (2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference and 35 in the Big Ten Conference), and won 20 bowl games, including 7 Rose Bowl victories. The Buckeyes football program has produced 78 consensus All-American and 7 Heisman Trophy winners.

The Ohio State Buckeyes rose to prominence under their legendary and notorious head coach Woody Hayes, who coached the team from 1951 to 1978. Under Hayes the Buckeyes won 5 National Titles, 13 Big Ten Conference titles and 5 Rose Bowls. The famous "Ten Year War" (1969-1978) between Ohio State and Michigan, pitted Woody Hayes against the Wolverines legendary coach Bo Schembechler in one of college football's fiercest rivalries. Hayes was fired after punching a Clemson player during the 1978 Gator Bowl. Current head coach Jim Tressel has led the Buckeyes to a National Championship in 2002 and back to back appearances in the BCS championship game following the 2006 and 2007 seasons. Most recently Ohio State won the 2010 Rose Bowl and 2011 Sugar Bowl.
