Notre Dame Fighting Irish History

The University of Notre Dame’s football team, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, play as an Independent team as part of the NCAA’s Football Bowl Division I Subdivision. Notre Dame began playing college football in 1887 and has an all-time record of 845-295-42 for an outstanding .733 winning percentage. Notre Dame has won 11 national titles and 15 bowl games. The Fighting Irish have produced 96 consensus All-Americans and 7 Heisman Trophy winners.

Notre Dame’s 11 national championships, 7 Heisman winners and 96 consensus All-Americans are all the most of any Football Bowl Subdivision program. Their .734 winning percentage is 2nd highest, trailing only Michigan’s .735. Notre Dame also is in third place for all-time wins with 845, trailing only Texas (850) and Michigan (884). The Fighting Irish have also had 103 winning seasons with just 13 losing seasons in 122 years of playing football. Notre Dame trails only USC in number of players that have played in the NFL.

The current head coach of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish is Brian Kelly, who had an 8-5 record in his first year. Notre Dame’s home games are played in Notre Dame, Indiana (next to South Bend, IN) at Notre Dame Stadium, which has a seating capacity of 80,795.
