new england patriots History

The professional NFL football team New England Patriots are based out of the Boston, MA area. Their home games are played at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA. The Patriots are an American Football Conference member of the East Division. The team was originally named the Boston Patriots. They changed their name in 1971 after the team moved to Foxborough, although the city is only 22 miles away from Boston.

The Patriots were an original American Football League member. When the NFL and AFL merged in 1970, the Patriots became part of the NFL. The team made four playoff appearances before January 1986, when they appeared in Super Bowl XX. They lost to the Chicago Bears. In January 1997 the Patriots also played in Super Bowl XXXI, but were defeated by the Green Bay Packers.

The Patriots, from 2001 to 2005, won three Super Bowls during the four year span. They were the second NFL team, following the Dallas Cowboys, to accomplish that and the eighth team to win Super Bowls back to back. However the Patriots lost Super Bowl XLII to the New York Giants after they had won their first 18 games during the 2007 season. The Patriots under coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady led the team to compile the NFL's longest winning streak that includes regular season as well as playoff games. In 2003-2004, the team won 21 games in a row.
