The University of Michigan's football team, the Michigan Wolverines, play in the Big Ten Conference as part of the NCAA's Football Bowl Division I Subdivision. The Wolverines began playing college football in 1879. They have an all-time record of 884-308-36 for a .735 winning percentage. Their 884 wins and .735 winning percentage are the highest winning percentage and most all-time wins in the history of college football. The Wolverines also hold the record for most winning seasons in college football history with 112. Michigan has produced 77 consensus All-Americans and 3 Heisman Trophy Winners (Tom Harmon, Desmond Howard and Charles Woodson).

Michigan became a Big Ten Conference member when it was formed in 1896. Michigan has shared or won 42 Big Ten conference titles, the most of any Big Ten college football program. Michigan also holds the record for most top 10 finishes with 37 and has won 11 national championships. The Wolverines have a 19-21 bowl record, including 8 Rose Bowl wins. Prior to the 2008 season, Michigan have appeared in bowl games for 33 consecutive years and had winning seasons for 40 straight years.

Michigan has had a series of legendary coaches, including Fielding Yost (1901-1926), Bo Schembechler (1969-1989) and Lloyd Carr (1995-2007). Currently the head coaching position for Michigan is vacant. Rich Rodriguez was dismissed following the 2010 season. His three year record with the Wolverines was 15-22. The home games of the Michigan Wolverines are played in Ann Arbor, Michigan at Michigan Stadium, which has a seating capacity of 109,901.
