Louisiana State University's football team, the LSU Tigers (also known as the Bayou Bengals or Fighting Tigers), plays in the Western Division of the SEC as part of the NCAA's Football Bowl Division I Subdivision. Les Miles has been the head coach of the LSU Tigers since 2005. Entering the 2010 season, LSU had 709 wins, which is 12th most in the history of the NCAA and fourth most for any team in the SEC. Coming into the 2010 season LSU also had an all-time winning percentage of .641, which is 14th best all-time in the NCAA, and 4th best for the SEC.

The LSU Tigers have won 13 conference championships in total from three difference conferences. In 1933, they became one of the founding members of the SEC. They have won ten SEC championships, which is fourth most. Since division play started in 1992, the Tigers have won the SEC West or shared the title seven times. They have a 3-1 record playing for the SEC Championship. LSU has played in a total of 42 bowl games. Their bowl record is 22-19-1.

The LSU Tigers recently have enjoyed great success. In 2004, they won the National Championship of the BCS, defeating Oklahoma by a score of 21-14 in New Orleans at the Super Bowl. They also defeated Ohio State in the 2008 National Championship Game by a score of 38-24 to become the first team to win more than one BCS national title.
