The NFL professional football team Detroit Lions are based out of Detroit, Michigan. The team is a member of the National Football Conference's North Division. The Lions home games are played in downtown Detroit at Ford Field.

The team was originally named Portsmouth Spartans and were based out of Portsmouth, Ohio. They started out as an independent professional football team and started play in 1929. The Spartans became a member of the National Football League in 1930. In 1934 the team was bought and then relocated to Detroit.

The Detroit Lions are the winners of four NFL Championships. Their last championship was in 1957, the second longest drought for winning an NFL championship after the Arizona Cardinals. The Lions are only one of four NFL teams currently playing that have never played in the Super Bowl.
