The professional NFL football team Baltimore Ravens are based out of Baltimore, Maryland. The team is an American Football Conference member of the North Division. The team's name refers to an Edgar Allan Poe poem, "The Raven." Poe worked and lived in Baltimore during various times of his life.

The Baltimore Ravens were formed in 1996. Art Modell, who at that time owned the Cleveland Browns, made an announcement that he intended to move his team to Baltimore, which caused a huge controversy. The NFL and Cleveland representatives reached a settlement in February 1996. The Baltimore Ravens retained their player contracts but became an expansion team. The Browns name, franchise records and history, as well as team colors and uniforms stayed in Cleveland.

The Ravens defeated the New York Giants to win Super Bowl XXXV following the 2000 season. It is the best season in Baltimore Ravens franchise history. Currently, the Ravens are one of four teams that have won their only Super Bowl appearance.
